Here in midlife, as my parents are aging (and so am I, just not as dramatically yet) on this side of child-rearing… I can’t help but look back and remember. Plus, I have beloved church friends who are new parents, and watching their fresh experiences (along with the literal physicality of snuggling the babies) from this side of Parenting Mountain…whew. It’s a real mind-bender. I now understand what my older friends were saying all along by exclaiming, “But inside I’m 35!”

That’s different than unbidden and seemingly random (OR ARE THEY, which is your premise) memories dredged up from the long past. But the point is different life stages expose us to this, for sure.

In her last days, my mother saw my father (by then decades dead) and a number of friends and family from her distant past in her room at her old-age residence. I’ve never seen reason to doubt what she saw.
