Kristina, I don't usually have actors in mind when I read, either...which has made me wonder how I envision characters when I read. I don't think I see set facial features. I have a general idea of what a character looks like, but nothing specific. I rarely see a movie before I read the book, but once that happens, my mind tends to see the actor from the movie as the book character.

Of course, money and market considerations rule, once budgets blow out to cyclopean proportions. All those 'miscastings' you cite involved 'bankable' stars whose signing would have reassured backers. The recent online hoo-hahs about franchise exploitations of Star Wars (The Acolyte) and The Lord of the Rings (Rings of Power) have called out the enormous resources thrown at, essentially, galvanised corpses of the original concepts in unseemly bids to wring more profit from them, with scant attention to quality of production or writing. The goose that laid the golden egg metamorphsed into a battery hen, more or less. It's the way of the world, of course, but the results can still shock.

I agree with Anne Rice's skepticism of Tom Cruise, and having loved those books in my college years and having seen the movie...sorry, still don't like him. Glad she came around, though.

I don't often "cast" the books I write or read, but I just read THE WATERS by fellow Michigan author Bonnie Jo Campbell and I found the witchy matriarch to be so unmistakably evoking Kathy Bates she is exactly whom I pictured the whole time

Joe, I'm thinking it's a little of both. If an actor REALLY doesn't work with your memory of the book, it can be jarring!

Joe, I think most authors have images of their characters in their minds as they write, and you can't help but "cast" your book as you go along. (It's a guilty pleasure.) I'd love to see what a casting director had in mind for my characters!

I also was a big fan of all the James Bond books in the 60s when I was a teen. Connery is still my favorite Bond in the movies. I wonder if the movies shade our memories of what we read, or the characters just fit?

I wonder how Peter Jackson felt about the casting for the LOTR trilogy/Hobbit? I've read the books more than once and the mental images I developed in the 1970 seemed so right when the movies came along.
